Spaying Cattle using Willis Dropped Ovary Procedure

This unit equips you with the essential skills and knowledge to plan, prepare, and perform the Dropped Ovary Technique (DOT) procedures, including post-procedure care, for controlling fertility in female cattle within extensive beef herds.

The Animal Care and Protection Act was passed in November 2022 requiring an accreditation scheme for lay spaying. This course allows successful participants eligibility to apply for Lay Spaying accreditation.

The Lay Sapying accreditation scheme requires that all applicants provide a Statement of Attainment for the unit AHCLSK338 – Conduct dropped ovary technique procedures for spaying cattle

Who Should Enrol

Individuals who conduct DOT procedures for spaying cattle under general supervision, this course is for individuals who have been conducting DOT procedures and who are now looking to deliver commercial spaying services.

RPL Pathway

As a way of recognising your existing and current skills and knowledge within formal vocational education and training an Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pathway is available. You may have acquired these skills and knowledge through workplace experience or informal learning programs. 

The RPL assessment pathway will consists of the candidate providing evidence of their skills and experience using the Willis Dropped Ovary Technique for spaying cattle.

Further, the candidate will then be eligible to apply for accreditation as non-veterinarian spayer (or lay spayer) via the industry-endorsed and operated accreditation scheme.

Cost

The RPL Cost is broken up into 3 parts.

Part 1 – Enrolment – $150
Part 2 – After review of application and prior to Professional Conversation – $1500
Part 3 – After review of practical evidence – $665.  If you have provided your Agforce membership number, you will receive a discount of $210 off this part.

Prerequisites

Participants are required to have at least one year of experience working with cattle.

Qualification

This unit is currently offered through RPL pathway.

Pathways to further study

Students who successfully complete the course can progress to AHC30122 Certificate III in Agriculture. Please note, AgForce Training does not offer this qualification.
