When it comes to practical knowledge of the Australian beef industry, few people bring the depth of experience that Matt Brown does.
Based in Rockhampton, Matt has spent a lifetime working with cattle producers across some of Australia’s most diverse grazing landscapes. His career has taken him from hands-on cattle management to leading major industry initiatives, always with one goal in mind, helping producers make practical decisions that improve the long-term success of their businesses.
As a trainer with AgForce Training, Matt combines decades of real-world experience with an engaging, down-to-earth approach that makes even the most complex topics easy to understand and apply.
“The best training isn’t about standing at the front of a room talking,” Matt says. “It’s about sharing knowledge, encouraging discussion and giving people practical tools they can use as soon as they get back to the property.”
Matt’s background spans every aspect of the beef industry. Alongside operating Brown Cattle & Country Consultants, he has worked extensively in agricultural extension, grazing management, business planning, breeding strategies and workshop facilitation.
His previous work with the Queensland Department of Agriculture saw him play a significant role in developing industry-leading initiatives, including Grazing Resilience and Sustainable Solutions (GRASS) and Grazing BMP, programs that have helped producers strengthen business resilience while improving the sustainability of their grazing enterprises.
Throughout more than two decades of facilitation, Matt has become known for translating technical information into practical, on-property solutions.
“Every property is different,” he explains. “There’s never a one-size-fits-all answer. Good training is about understanding each business and helping producers find solutions that work for their own goals, landscapes and livestock.”
Matt is particularly passionate about helping producers improve herd performance through breeding strategies, artificial insemination and reproductive management, while also supporting better grazing management, land condition and business planning.
For him, the most rewarding part of training is watching producers gain confidence in their own decision-making.
“The knowledge is already there within our industry. Sometimes people just need the opportunity to share ideas, ask questions and build confidence in the decisions they’re making.”
Peer-to-peer learning has always been central to Matt’s approach, believing some of the best learning happens when producers share experiences with one another.
Outside the classroom, Matt remains deeply connected to the cattle industry through consultancy work, helping producers with breeding objectives, marketing strategies, business planning and land management. His practical understanding of both the commercial and strategic sides of agriculture allows him to relate to producers at every stage of their business.
Looking ahead, Matt is passionate about supporting a stronger, more resilient beef industry by helping producers continue learning, adapting and embracing new opportunities.
